City Gas and STB Shine the Spotlight on Heritage Hawkers at Amoy Street Food Centre

20 July 2018

City Gas offers $2,500 worth of hawker food vouchers for locals and tourists to partake in the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Singapore Food Festival

City Gas, Singapore’s town gas and natural gas utilities provider, and the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) jointly hosted the fourth edition of the annual Hawker Spotlight today, a staple event held in conjunction with the annual Singapore Food Festival (SFF). This year’s Hawker Spotlight showcase was held at Amoy Street Food Centre – a common haunt amongst food-loving locals and tourists in search of delicious yet affordable grub in the heart of Singapore’s Central Business District. This year’s edition of the event marks the third time City Gas and STB have collaborated to present Hawker Spotlight. East Coast Lagoon Food Village and Maxwell Food Centre were the featured hawker centres in 2016 and 2017 respectively.

In the 2017 Michelin Guide Singapore, Amoy Street Food Centre was home to the most number of stalls – a total of six hawker stalls were featured in the Guide, of which four stalls were Bib Gourmand recipients. It is little wonder that the two-storey hawker centre is well regarded as a food lover’s paradise, with its array of local cuisine and dishes to offer everyone – from handmade charcoal-toasted kaya bread; to the traditional ginger milk tea beverage teh halia; to piping hot fishball noodles.

Through the hawker showcase, local media partners were introduced to the unsung heroes of Amoy Street Food Centre – the second and third generation hawkers continuing their family’s tradition, despite the back-breaking work, in order to continue serving locals and visitors delicious local hawker fare which is unique to Singapore.

Mr Kenny Tan, Chief Executive Officer of City Gas, said, “City Gas sees value in supporting heritage hawkers. Without them, the traditional ways of preparing our local delicacies may have been long forgotten. We are certainly pleased to once again work hand in hand with the Singapore Tourism Board to raise public awareness of the value of our hawker food heritage beyond local foodies and to the international audience.”

Ms Ranita Sundra, Director, Retail & Dining, Singapore Tourism Board, said: “Hawker Spotlight is one of several exciting food events held in conjunction with the annual Singapore Food Festival. As the only food festival in Singapore dedicated to featuring Singaporean cuisine prepared by our home-grown culinary heroes, it is apt to once again use this platform to shine the spotlight on our hawkers, who work hard to keep this trade and our hawker culture alive. We are happy to partner City Gas to present Hawker Spotlight and showcase our shared passion for food with locals and visitors.”

5 Hawker Stalls Featured in Hawker Spotlight

Led by well-known food connoisseur, Dr Leslie Tay, better known as the person behind the popular food blog ieatishootipost,  the media entourage was introduced to five heritage hawker stalls, which are Ah Seng (Hai Nam) Coffee, known for  its charcoal-toasted kaya bread; Quan Ji, a tze char stall currently helmed by a third-generation hawker; Ah Ter Teochew Fishball Noodles which still makes its fishballs by hand; Hai Ji, a second-generation stall which sells economic bee hoon and nasi lemak, as well as Syed Mohammed Drinks, known for its teh halia, teh tarik, and homemade iced lemon tea.

At the end of the tour, the media group was invited to sample the delectable spread of food and drinks from the featured hawker stalls.
