More than 2,600 hawkers to receive up to S$100 rebate per month through end 2021
City Gas, the nation’s piped gas provider, will disburse over S$1 million worth of gas in the form of rebates to 2,602 hawkers within its network of 59 hawker centres across Singapore.
In the heritage company’s history of 160 years in business, City Gas has built a strong reputation for safety and reliability to become a trusted energy partner for the nation.
As the piped gas provider to more than half of the hawker centres in Singapore, City Gas has been an ardent supporter and friend to hawkers. Since 2008, City Gas has supported hawkers and local food through City Hawker Food Hunt, Singapore’s longest running hawker food contest, and other hawker-related activities.
It is in this spirit of caring for the community that City Gas is supporting its hawkers, who are not only representatives of Singapore’s UNESCO-endorsed intangible cultural heritage, but also providers of basic daily meals for all in Singapore.
City Gas Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Perry Ong, says, “Hawkers in Singapore have been hit hard by the pandemic, and it is more important than ever to support them now. We are at a turning point for the hawker trade and for our nation, which is why City Gas feels we must do our part to help our local culinary heroes and preserve our local food heritage.”
The scale and deep community connections of City Gas allows it to positively impact close to half of all hawker centres’ hawkers in Singapore. This current support initiative will provide direct rebates of up to S$100 per hawker on their gas bills for the last four months of the year, from September through the end of December.
Working with City Gas over several generations, inter-generational hawkers in particular were appreciative of the gas rebate during this difficult period.
Says Anthony Low of the second-generation Xin Sheng Ngoh Hiong Prawn Cracker at Boon Lay Place Food Village, “We are grateful for this rebate as it will help get us through the end of the year. It is a simple way to put an extra S$400 in our pockets during this difficult period. City Gas and hawkers support each other.”
Third-generation hawker stall at Amoy Street Food Centre, Quan Ji, helmed by father-and-son stallholders Siew Sew Meng and Siew Peng Yin agree, “This stall is not only our business, but also our family reputation. City Gas is standing in solidarity with us. Any assistance to decrease overheads during this period and help sustain our business is greatly appreciated.”
City Gas has structured this initiative as an automatically applied, direct rebate to the hawkers’ utility accounts. This offers the fastest and simplest form of support as it does not require any action from the hawkers to receive these funds.
