Kick-off of the longest running hawker food contest
The 11th season of the City Hawker Food Hunt, Singapore’s longest running hawker food contest, is launched today at the Golden Mile Food Centre by Ms Denise Phua, Mayor of Central Singapore Community Development Council (CDC) and Member of Parliament for JalanBesar Group Representation Constituency (GRC).
At the kick-off event this morning, Ms Denise Phua was joined by the organisers of the event, City Gas and Shin Min Daily News. Flanked by Mr Kenny Tan, CEO of City Gas, and Mr Bernard Choo, Editor of Shin Min Daily News, Ms Denise Phua showed support for her favourite hawker stall by casting the inaugural nomination for the People’s Choice Local Food award category which officially opened today.
Hawker patrons at the Golden Mile Food Centre engaged in the community event by casting their nomination too on the contest website, www.cityhawkerfoodhunt.com. In return, they could redeem a set of reusable cutlery during the launch. The free redemption was held to encourage hawker food patrons to use reusable cutlery in place of disposable ones. This is in line with City Gas’ support for the “Year of Climate Action” initiative.
Through the last decade, the City Hawker Food Hunt campaign has grown organically into an islandwide public campaign that recognises hawker stall owners who whip up delicious hawker delights. This year the public can nominate any of their preferred hawker stalls in the Local Food, Value-for-Money and Healthier Choice categories on www.cityhawkerfoodhunt.com from June to September 2018. (Please refer to Annex A for details on the voting period).
While the top ten hawker stalls which receive the most number of nominations in each category will be presented with the People’s Choice Hawker Stall award, two stalls which garner the highest nominations will enter the People’s Choice Hall of Fame to win $1,000 cash reward.
To rally the community of hawker food patrons together to express their support and appreciation for local delights, each nomination will stand a chance to win a 2D1N Weekend Staycation at a luxury hotel.
The City Hawker Food Hunt was initiated by City Gas and Shin Min Daily News in 2008. It is the only hawker contest platform for residents of Singapore to submit their nomination on well-deserving hawker stalls, and receives strong support from the National Environment Agency, Health Promotion Board and Singapore Tourism Board.
