Total of thirty hawker stalls celebrated at the Awards Presentation Ceremony 2019
City Hawker Food Hunt, co-organised by City Gas and Shin Min Daily News, held the 12th City Hawker Food Hunt Awards Presentation Ceremony at Bedok Town Square this morning. Dr Amy Khor, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources & Ministry of Health, presented 30 award plaques to hawkers who obtained the highest number of votes for the People’s Choice Local Food, People’s Choice International Food and People’s Choice Healthier Choice categories. (Please refer to Annex A for the list of winners).
The People’s Choice International Food is a new award category aimed at recognising the rising popularity and availability of international food at hawker centres, and giving the public the opportunity to vote for international food cuisine at hawker centres. The winners in this category belong to hawker stalls which dish out flavourful Japanese, Mexican and Thai food; as well as a local favourite – Western food.
During the 3-month long campaign, publicity efforts were ramped up to increase public awareness of Singapore’s longest running hawker food contest. There were 23 voting booths set up at 13 selected hawker centres to encourage the public to vote for their favourite hawker food stalls in the respective categories. In addition, a series of videos was specially produced to showcase hawker centres and hawker food delights across this year’s award categories.
In his opening speech, Mr Tan Juay Hwa, City Gas Vice President for Commercial and Industrial Sales, shared that City Hawker Food Hunt’s “objectives are community-driven to provide an organic platform for hawkers to be recognised for tasty local food; and for City Hawker Food Hunt awards to be the definitive guide for hawker patrons scouring for good food found in all the hawker centres in Singapore.”
Dr Amy Khor, Senior Minister of State for the Environment and Water Resources, said: “Hawker centres and hawker culture are part of our Singaporean identity, and an integral part of our daily lives. Over the years, hawker centres have become community dining rooms where Singaporeans from all walks of life come together to enjoy a variety of tasty and affordable hawker food. I am glad that we are also recognising hawkers who have introduced international cuisines and healthier food options – this reflects how our hawker centres have evolved to meet changing customer tastes and preferences over time. All of us can help sustain this heritage by visiting not just the veteran hawkers who have honed their craft over the years, but also the new entrants who have taken the step to pursue their passion for cooking. By patronising hawker centres, we can help to ensure that the hawker culture lives on for future generations.”
In addition, the Health Promotion Board (HPB) takes the opportunity to commend City Gas and Shin Min Daily News for another year of success in organising the City Hawker Food Hunt. Commented Ms Ann Low, Senior Deputy Director, Healthy Food & Dining Division, “HPB would like to congratulate the City Hawker Food Hunt 2019 People’s Choice Healthier Choice award winners for achieving public recognition for their healthier hawker dishes, such as fishball noodles, chicken porridge and brown rice. By putting a spotlight on the availability of such tasty hawker dishes which are lower in calories or prepared with wholegrains, we can encourage the public to opt for healthier options when enjoying our local hawker fares.”
City Hawker Food Hunt was initiated by City Gas and Shin Min Daily News in 2008. The hawker food contest receives strong support from the Health Promotion Board, National Environment Agency and Singapore Tourism Board.
