City Hawker Food Hunt Turns 10!

24 April 2017

Longest running hawker food contest continues to celebrate Singapore’s hawker heritage and love for affordable local delights

Singapore, 24 April 2017 – The City Hawker Food Hunt observed its 10th year anniversary this month, making it the longest running hawker food contest to ever grace the local food scene. Celebrating a decade of promoting Singapore’s hawker heritage and affordable local delights, the opening ceremony to the annually held food hunt took place this afternoon at Ci Yuan Community Club in the presence of Guest-of-Honour (GOH), Mr Darryl David, Member of Parliament, Ang Mo Kio Group Representation Constituency.

Together with 50 senior citizens from the Ang Mo Kio-Hougang constituency, guests feasted on Braised Duck Rice, Seafood Hor Fun, Mee Rebus and Curry Rice – the four food categories to be contested at this year’s City Hawker Food Hunt.

Recognising the sheer amount of support received in the last 10 years from Singaporeans who share the love for delicious yet affordable food, the main organisers – City Gas will be giving away a $5 Hawker Food Voucher for free, totalling close to $18,000, through roving van activations islandwide between April and early November this year. These vouchers can be used for food and drinks at selected hawker centres.

Said Mr Kenny Tan, Chief Executive Officer, City Gas: “It’s an honour to look back at these 10 years knowing that the City Hawker Food Hunt has had a hand in preserving and promoting Singapore’s hawker heritage. However, we wouldn’t have come this far if not for the support of fellow Singaporeans and esteemed partners from the various government agencies who share our love for local hawker fares. Together, let’s continue to pay tribute to our hawkers, who have been working tirelessly to keep our heritage alive, by recognising their contributions.”

As the 4-month long food hunt progresses, members of the public can start voting for the Best of the Best Hawker Stall from the top 10 stalls selected by the City Hawker Food Hunt Committee for each food category.

The Committee will also be on the search for hawker stalls in these special award
categories: Young Hawker Award, Heritage Hawker Award and Most Economical Hawker Award.

The City Hawker Food Hunt was started by City Gas and Shin Min Daily News in 2008 as a campaign to search for the best local delights. Today it is has evolved to become an established platform that promotes Singapore’s rich hawker culture and heritage food at affordable prices. Over the years, it has received strong support from multiple government agencies. This year, City Hawker Food Hunt is delighted to have on board the Health Promotion Board, National Environment Agency and Singapore Tourism Board.
