To commemorate the 5th successful year of City Hawker Food Hunt, the City Hawker Food Guide will be launched at the Closing Ceremony this year. The City Hawker Food Guide is a comprehensive food guide featuring the public’s choice of top hawker stalls.
Over 4 years, the City Hawker Food Hunt has scoured our sunny island for the best hawker stalls. 160 hawker stalls have emerged as the top 10 best in their featured food categories. These outstanding stalls have been chronicled into the City Hawker Food Guide arranged by the 16 different food categories. In the Food Guide as well, all 112 hawker centres in Singapore are mapped out in a coloured Singapore map for the first time. This map will also indicate the locations to find the “Best of the Best” of all 16 hawker food categories for easy reference.
Besides the list of hawker stalls a brief historical background will accompany each food category about its beginning. Recipes with healthier twists are included as well for readers to attempt making their favourite hawker food at home. The recipes were contributed and devised by celebrity chefs such as Chef Eric Teo, Chef Eric Low, Chef Asmah Laili, Chef Yong Bing Ngen, Chef Milind Sovani and also chefs from Kintamani Restaurant.
About the food guide Mr Ng Yong Hwee, President and CEO of City Gas Pte Ltd said, “The City Hawker Food Guide is a testament to Singapore’s hawker legacy. We not only want to share where fine hawker food can be found, but also the history of each hawker food. As you flip through it and see the alternative recipes provided, we hope you can see the effort and dedication our hawkers put into cooking up each dish.”
Winning hawkers from previous 4 years of City Hawker Food Hunt were invited by the City Hawker Food Hunt committee to attend the closing ceremony. A copy of the City Hawker Food Hunt was gifted to them as a token of appreciation and recognition of their delicious hawker food. One copy of the City Hawker Food Guide will also be made available at the National Library. The public could also collect complimentary copies of the Food Guide from any of the three City Gas Galleries.
This year, 2012, the four hawker food categories hunted for City Hawker Food Hunt are: Nasi Briyani, Fishball Noodles, Vegetarian Food, and Lor Mee. Over a period of 8 months, the public have voted for their favourite stall from each food category through SMS, online polling and mail submissions. Sub-awards including “Cleanest Hawker Centre Award”, “Most Healthier Choice Award” and “Most Authentic Hawker Food Award” were distributed at the Closing Ceremony as well.
Approximately 5000 votes from the public were submitted for the most coveted award of City Hawker Food Hunt – “My Favourite Hawker Centre” Award. This year, Chomp Chomp Food Centre has been voted to receive this award for the second year running.
City Hawker Food Hunt and City Hawker Food Guide is jointly organized by City Gas and Shin Min Daily News and supported by the National Environment Agency (NEA) and Health Promotion Board (HPB).
