Singapore, 2 June, 2016 – The 9th City Hawker Food Hunt is back to celebrate Singapore’s unique hawker heritage. The opening ceremony for the yearly hawker extravaganza was held at Ayer Rajah Food Centre this afternoon. At the launch, 40 senior citizen residents from the West Coast Constituency were invited to a hawker lunch reception where they got to enjoy Ngoh Hiang, BBQ Stingray and Fried Rice – the hawker categories selected for this year’s islandwide hawker food contest.

City Hawker Food Hunt was initiated by City Gas and Shin Min Daily in 2008 as a community campaign in search for the best hawker fares in Singapore. The hawker food contest has since received fervent support from Singaporeans and frequent hawker food patrons who appreciate our delectable local delights. Over the years, City Hawker Food Hunt has evolved organically into a campaign that awards and recognises deserving hawkers. It has also rallied fellow Singaporeans together to express our love for local delights and learn to be appreciative of the challenges faced by hawkers.

At the opening ceremony, Mr. Teo Kwan Hai, Acting CEO of City Gas and Mr. Pan Cheng Lui, Chief-in-Editor of Shin Min Daily News officiated the launch of the new Makan Makeover Contest. Makan Makeover is a contest for members of the public to attempt to transform and “makeover” the appearance of hawker fares. Using the original food ingredients from hawker fare purchased at hawker centres, participants are encouraged to transform the appearance of the dish by re-arranging the ingredients and/or adding non-edible decoration. By submitting a photo of their makeover hawker dish on Facebook, participants could win some prizes.

In the upcoming months, the public will have their say in voting for the best of the best stalls among the top 10 stalls chosen by the City Hawker Food Hunt Committee for each food category. The public can vote for their favourite hawker centre for the coveted “Favourite Hawker Centre” award at www.cityhawkerfoodhunt.com. In addition, the other City Hawker Food Hunt award categories are – “Innovative / Fusion Hawker Stall Award”, “Green Hawker Stall Award” and “Most Economical Hawker Stall Award”.

City Hawker Food Hunt is supported by Health Promotion Board, National Environment Agency and Singapore Tourism Board.
