City Gas Pte Ltd, as Trustee of City Gas Trust, announced today that the gas tariff for households will increase by 1.05% for the period 1 May to 31 Jul 2013. This follows the drop in tariffs in the last three quarters of 2.8% (1 Aug to 31 Oct 2012), 0.84% (1 Nov 2012 to 31 Jan 2013) and 1.5% (1 Feb 2013 to 30 Apr 2013) respectively.
The tariff increase is due to higher fuel prices. The fuel component of the tariff for May to Jul 2013 is based on the average forward fuel price from 1 Jan to 31 Mar 2013. Fuel prices have been on an upward trend since Jan 2013, it peaked in mid Feb before receding slightly in Mar. Compared to the previous quarter, the average fuel price for Jan to Mar 2013 had increased by 2.8%.
The gas tariff for households will increase from 21.04 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh) to 21.26 cents per kWh. The increase in the average town gas bill for households will range from 10 cents a month for 1-room HDB flats to 19 cents a month for 5-room HDB flats.
City Gas reviews the gas tariffs based on guidelines set by the Energy Market Authority (EMA), the gas industry regulator. The revised gas tariffs, which have been approved by EMA to take effect from 1 May 2013, are as follows:
